Eco-Printing of Indonesia: Wear the Gifts of Nature
IMG_2372 (1).JPG

Do you know what materials and processes are used to make the clothes you are wearing now? The clothing industry has a significant impact on our environment due to the use of chemical dyes. According to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, textile production consumes around 93 billion cubic meters of water annually—equivalent to 37 million Olympic swimming pools. A 2012 study reported that wastewater from the dyeing and finishing processes of clothing actually accounts for approximately 20% of wastewater worldwide.

Would you like to bring eco-friendly products into your daily life and take a step to protect our living Earth? Let me introduce you to Indonesia’s Eco-Printing which allows you to wear the beauty of nature while supporting ethical practices. Eco-printing uses no synthetic dyes or chemicals, making it an environmentally friendly alternative.

It is a technique where plants, leaves, and flowers leave their shapes, colors, and marks on fabric. Lay the leaves or flowers on the cloth and wait about 2 or 3 weeks for the color of the plants to appear on the cloth. Plants material bundled inside of clothes is steamed or boiled to release the dye found naturally inside the plants, creating a contact print in the shape of the leaf or flower used. Typically, cotton serves as the base fabric for eco-printing, allowing for vibrant yet soft results.

Eco-printing has gained popularity over the past five years among people interested in sustainable practices. Its charm lies in the fact that no synthetic dyes or chemicals are used, making it an environmentally friendly alternative. Each piece created through eco-printing is unique, with no homogeneous patterns or colors - an authentic reflection of nature’s artistry.

Two Baskets shop in Balmain, Sydney, has been offering Eco-prints from Indonesia, such as hats, dresses, pouches, bags, and more. Each piece of fabric tells a story, representing the unique landscapes and the world’s biodiversity.
